W
hen David Guzman became
CIO of H. D. Smith in 2011,
one of the first things he did
was get rid of the word "vendor" from
the badges of the company's contract
IT staff. This was a first step in removing
the distinction between IT professionals
whose paychecks came directly from H.
D. Smith (one of the largest wholesalers
of healthcare products, services, and
solutions in the U.S.) and those whose
paychecks were written by one of the
company's strategic technology partners.
"As a leader, it's my job to motivate,
inspire, lead, and mentor everyone ," he
says - not just the direct employees.
This is just one manifestation of
how digital business is changing the
relationships between CIOs and their
vendor partners. Information technology
has played an important role in companies'
fortunes for decades, and CIOs have
cultivated strategic partnerships for just
as long. But today the stakes are higher,
the implications reach a lot deeper into
the organization, and the landscape is a
lot less stable. Digital technologies affect
not just companies' supply chains or the
way they process transactions; they touch
customers, decision making, operations,
and business models.
The degree to which organizations of all types
depend on IT far exceeds what most have
experienced in the past. Consequently, strategic
partnerships have evolved from a focus primarily
on capabilities and costs to encompass
the future shape of organizations and
their strategies.
"A strategic partner is a consistently
transparent, responsive, and trusted collaborator
in creating value in the enterprise," says Brendan
R. McGowan, Global Media Bureau & Client
Research Manager at the CIO Executive Council
and co-author of a recent research report on the

In short, strategic partnerships have become
even more strategic, and leading CIOs are
deepening those relationships in some
remarkable ways.
