CIO Straight Talk - Issue 12 - 7

O
ver the last decade or so, digital
transformation has radically changed the
competitive environment for businesses
around the world. Over the next decade or so,
" digital " will take on an expanded meaning,
as the transformation of many businesses is
turbo-charged by the technology of quantum
computing.
This revolutionary technology promises mindblowing
increases in computing power. Problems
that confound today's supercomputers, because
of their complexity or processing time, will be
solved by quantum computers in a matter of
seconds, according to experts. Indeed, some
advocates claim that quantum computers will be
able to perform in minutes a series of operations
that would take a supercomputer thousands of
years to complete.
Quantum computing's ability to run simulations
with countless variables and analyze gnarly
optimization problems could generate
productivity gains for end users valued at
hundreds of billions of dollars annually in the
next decade or so. Quantum computers won't
replace today's digital computers but rather
work in tandem with them, the two technologies
handling different tasks at the same time. In that
way, quantum technology is likely to transform
industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to
financial services to oil & gas to logistics.
None of this is going to happen tomorrow,
though. The first successful real-world quantum
computing applications are expected to emerge
sometime over the next several years, with
businesses able to fully tap into this massive
computing power around the end of the current
decade. The ramp-up challenges for companies
wanting to take advantage of the technology will
be substantial.
That's why forward-looking companies - even
as they are focused on their current digital
reinvention - are preparing themselves for
the time when quantum computing gains
commercial traction. They're investing time,
energy and money in educating themselves
about quantum computing, training a workforce
that will be ready to work with it, and conducting
experiments to identify specific ways they might
use it to their benefit.
In other words, companies that view quantum
computing as something to worry about in the
future risk finding themselves hopelessly behind
when its capabilities come on line.
What is quantum
computing?
The digital computers that touch every aspect
of our lives today are based on a binary code
of zeros and ones. Each bit, the fundamental
information unit of current computers, takes 0 or
1 as its value. In contrast, quantum bits, or qubits,
can take on not only a value of 0 or 1 but both at
the same time - a state known as " superposition. "
Here's a crude analogy: Imagine a flipped coin
that, when it lands, represents either heads or
tails - but not both. Then, instead of flipping the
coin, set it spinning upright on its edge, which
would allow it to represent not only heads or tails
but heads and tails simultaneously, in a nearly
infinite number of combinations.
In addition, two qubits can be linked together
in such a way that a change to one immediately
causes a change in the other - for example in
the spin of its electrons - without any physical
connection and over any distance. This is
called " quantum entanglement, " an interaction
independent of space and time that Albert
Einstein described as " spooky action at
a distance. "
These two somewhat mysterious and counterintuitive
characteristics of quantum mechanics
pave the way to a new approach to computing.
