quantum computers, " says Towler. In the future,
more powerful quantum computers will enable
the development of polymers, biodegradable
plastics, and other " things that contain hundred
and thousands of atoms. "
Optimization. Optimization, or finding the
best solution to a problem from many possible
options, is another prime candidate to
benefit early on from the power and speed of
quantum computers. What's the most efficient
organization of a warehouse? What is the best
way to carry out aircraft maintenance? How can
we design a transportation system that adjusts to
fluctuating demand?
When conventional digital computers tackle
optimization problems, the number of variables
that can be considered is limited. Quantum
computers replace the sequential manner in
which today's computers consider one set
of variables after another by simultaneously
running all possible options, thus narrowing
down the range of possible answers very quickly.
For example, the present global supply chain,
relying on the constant improvement of its
optimization algorithms, will benefit greatly from
the capabilities of quantum computers, allowing
for the quick identification of patterns of supply
and demand and for swift action in response to
sudden shortages or surpluses.
Encryption. Another application likely to yield
benefits involves the area that started it all. In
1994, Peter Shor, then of Bell Laboratories and
now MIT, invented a first-of-its-kind quantum
algorithm for factoring integers (finding the
prime factors of a given integer), which is
exponentially faster than the best algorithm
running on a conventional digital computer.
Running on a future practical quantum computer
with a sufficient number of qubits, Shor's
algorithm could be used to break current publickey
cryptography methods, such as the widelyused
RSA.
In this case, therefore, quantum computing
will be used solve a problem - decryption by
hackers - that has been created by quantum
computing. A number of government agencies,
research centers, and companies are trying to
figure out what quantum encryption will look
like and how to use the properties of quantum
mechanics to protect communications against
quantum decryption. We are probably still a
decade away from quantum computers being
able to decrypt RSA-encrypted communications.
But the time to prepare for that event - how
best to make a secure transition from current
cryptography to quantum cryptography - is now.
One need only consider all the business-crucial
historical data that is currently encrypted using
traditional methods and that in the future would
be vulnerable to quantum decryption.
What should
you do today?
A well-planned transition to the new era of
quantum computing - understanding its impact
on your business in terms of new opportunities
and challenges, determining how quantum
computers will work with the existing IT
infrastructure - should be an important priority
for business and technology executives.
The companies that understand
the potential impact of
quantum computing
on their industries
are already looking
at what it would
take to introduce
this new computing
capability into their
existing processes
