Artificial intelligence is a hot - and hotly debated - topic
these days. But it's not the first time that AI was going to
change the world. As our cover article by Contributing
Writer Gil Press points out, there have been several claims
over the past half-century that AI was becoming a reality.
This time, though, AI is for real - mainly because of today's
staggering proliferation of data.
As for being hotly debated, the subject of AI inevitably
leads to fevered predictions that we'll all be working for
robots soon. The article takes a different tack, offering
stories from technology executives about how they are
putting AI to work for them and their organizations.
The striking cover illustration depicting the AI-business
partnership is by Daniel Hertzberg, whose work has
appeared in publications ranging from National Geographic
to Rolling Stone. Oh, and be sure to check out the illustrated
poster of AI milestones, which date back to - get this - 1308
and include a trip through New York City streets by an
autonomous car in...1925!
The issue also features a number of smart articles by
C-level technology leaders, from the CTO of cosmetics
company Esteée Lauder to the CIO of the National Football
League. That these are both by women brings to mind the
recent CIO Straight Talk special issue, "The Advance of
Women in IT" (which can be found on our website, www.
Elsewhere in the issue, you'll find insights culled from
Straight Talk's social media channels, including highlights
of a Tweet chat on "leading in the digital age," hosted by @
CIOStraightTalk, and career advice for aspiring IT leaders,
taken from our gallery of video interviews with technology
executives (also available on our website).
Finally, we have interviews with two best-selling authors,
Martha Heller, on 10 things a successful CIO must be able
to do, and Thomas Davenport, on a topic that brings us
back to where we started - how to work with very
