infrastructure business manages today about 350,000 devices.
In recent years, HCL has combined its experience in mobile
technology and application development to create what it calls
Fully Loaded Service Lines (FLSLs) – that is, end-to-end solutions
focused on specific business challenges. FLSLs in the mobility
space combine specific industry expertise and draw upon the skills
and experience located in HCL’s four Centers of Excellence and
three Laboratories dedicated to mobile technology and solutions.
HCL offers a business and market-driven approach to mobile application development, including a proven Agile-based application
engineering methodology that enables rapid execution of a crossplatform mobile application roadmap.
The company has taken years of best practices learned from
SCRUM-based offshore Agile product development and “tuned” it
to satisfy the unique characteristics of mobile application development. Using the concept of “Nested Sprints,” HCL breaks down
complex, changing, multi-platform mobile application requirements into rapid incremental sprint releases.
The value proposition of HCL’s mobile application development
consists of six components, each one representing best-in-class
skills and in-depth expertise: interoperability, standardization,
security, user experience, performance, and availability. (For

In a typical engagement with a customer requiring a mobile
solution, HCL follows an established five-step process that it has
successfully implemented numerous times. It begins with a two- to
three-week discovery and consulting session, which provides the
necessary background for the second step, in which a specific area
to focus on is selected. The process then moves on to the development of a proof-of-concept that demonstrates how the mobile
solution is going to drive the transformation of the business. The
fourth step involves scaling the solution to cover other sets of
business pain points and establishing a comprehensive program. In
the final step, the program is executed. This five-step process
typically takes about 90 days from beginning to end, providing the
customer with clear milestones, methodologies, and deliverables.

Closing the gap
A recent Aberdeen Group worldwide survey of 1,300 executives
found that the number one pain point for the majority of respondents was the need to “propagate the vaunted productivity benefits
of mobility beyond the executive suite and field sales or service to
the broader organization.” Responding to this pressure, we will see
in 2012 many CIOs pursuing enterprise-wide mobility strategies,
working with partners such as HCL to steadily narrow the gap
between consumer and enterprise IT.
