The Mobility Imperative
There are two key objectives for developing and implementing
mobility solutions: One is the use of mobility as a new channel for
attracting and acquiring new customers. The other is the use of mobility as a way to increase employee productivity. The following are a
few examples from HCL’s extensive work with enterprises that are
implementing mobility-enabled business transformation to stay ahead
of competitive pressures affecting their industries.

Process automation transformation
Paper-based processes put a limit on productivity gains and
impact negatively the quality of work in many companies today.
Competitive pressures are forcing these companies to evaluate
and re-design entire processes, aiming for end-to-end automation,
reducing headcount and improving accuracy and efficiency.
Australia-based Veolia, a world leader in environmental solutions,
decided to move away from paper-based management of its fleet of
trucks. The real time process automation system HCL developed for
Veolia automated job scheduling and dispatch of trucks. The trucks
were fitted with HCL’s Mobile Data Terminal (with a touch screen),
which helped track the truck’s position in real time, check engine
safety and load, and interface with Veolia’s SAP billing system. In
addition, HCL provides 24x7 support and integration of the new
system with waste management components from PROLOGA™ and
Veolia’s existing SAP infrastructure.
The new system enables the logistics officer to monitor driver and
vehicle behavior and take routing decisions in real-time. It also
ensures accurate evaluation of waste collection, and the real-time
monitoring helps with immediate generation of revenue invoices. The
system eliminated the need for 30 full-time data entry employees and
significantly streamlined processes within an integrated business
environment on a single instance of SAP.

Retail sales force transformation
The retail industry is undergoing a radical transformation, centering on a connected customer experience, in which a single click
links consumers with providers. Fresh competitive pressures arise
from newer entrants (e.g., product manufacturers) who are using
multiple channels to reach consumers directly.
A leading European electronics retailer wanted to increase sales force
productivity, improve operational performance, and drive innovation
in customer service by streamlining processes, eliminating errors and
reducing costs. Developed in Agile mode, the HCL solution extended
internal business operations to remote employees by providing a
seamless and secure real-time access to critical business systems.
With its GPS component, the solution improved productivity and
quality of work by tracking vehicle, asset, and employee location;
managing inventory with barcode reading; recording actual time
worked on specific tasks assigned through the day; assigning,
tracking and recording tasks, including digital authorization and
sign-off from customers; and providing real-time de-brief for task
status, time and location.
The results were improved quality of customer service, streamlined
management of operational activity and goals, seamless integration
with back-end systems, improved communication throughout the
supply chain, and real-time task and route execution.

MERLIN:

HCL and Singapore Collaborate
On Enterprise Mobility Lab
The heart of the Mobility Revolution is Asia Pacific
countries like Japan, South Korea and Singapore,
where mobile broadband usage and penetration
outstrip that of the U.S. and Europe. HCL Technologies has joined forces with the Singapore government to further fuel this communications revolution.
As part of a public-private partnership with
Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB),
HCL opened the MERLIN (Mobility Experiences
Ready to Lead Business Innovation) global
enterprise mobility lab in early 2011.The 35,000
square foot facility, which employs 1,000 HCL
engineers and a growing number of recruits from
Singapore universities, spearheads HCL’s global
research and development efforts for enterprise
mobile solutions, while furthering Singapore’s goal
of building a vibrant infocomm ecosystem.
Whereas the HCL-Eli Lilly Co-Innovation Lab (see
the sidebar “Innovation-Driven Transformation”)
strives to incubate innovative ideas and concepts
based on Eli Lilly’s business needs, the MERLIN
Lab develops a broad array of enterprise mobility
solutions. The lab combines HCL’s leadership in
product engineering, focus on consumer experience and an entrepreneurial ecosystem of clients,
partners and developers to meet business’s mobility
needs. So far, solutions have been demonstrated in
the areas of field-force enablement, enterprise
productivity and service personalization.
In the past year, 165 CIOs have visited the lab to
discuss solutions under development.
