the advisory council, all IT leaders with deep and broad
experience, have formed strong relationships and engage
in a very valuable peer-to-peer knowledge transfer,
sharing solutions we have implemented and our experiences of what works and what doesn’t. The HCL
Customer Advisory Council is one of the few areas where
I feel there’s a clear return on investment on my time. It is
a great example of successful knowledge sharing among
IT leaders and between them as a group and one of their
IT partners.

Generating Business Intelligence
The elevation of IT from data processor to knowledge
manager can perhaps best be seen in the analysis of data
that drives successful business decisions. We have
invested heavily in this in the past couple of years, more
from a resource and a focus perspective than simply in
terms of capital investment. As an early adopter of the
concept, Brocade invested in data warehousing and
business intelligence in the early 2000s. This environment
ultimately evolved into a series of data marts that were not
built on a common data model.
Recently we replaced this legacy environment with a
business intelligence environment that we created from
the ground up. We have come a long way in terms of
integrating all the data in the enterprise into this environment, wrapping it with data governance – an enterprisewide effort with participation throughout the business. In
addition to investments around data quality and data
enrichment, we have also started what I call a business
intelligence service bureau, helping the company move
from a myriad of independent reports to one consistent
view of the enterprise.

With this in mind, I hired several people from retail
businesses. With the help of their experience, we are
building a retail-inspired capability in IT through a “business intelligence service bureau.” Our intention is to
eventually spin the expertise out into the business
functions.
I believe that business intelligence will be a core competency for IT organizations in the future, particularly as the
field evolves to integrate unstructured data and truly
represent the entire knowledge of the business. It is a great
opportunity for IT to establish itself in the new role as
company knowledge manager.

We thought it was best to bring this capability first into IT,
building some core competency around it within our
organization before we expanded it into the business. I felt
that we could learn a lot from the retail environments,
even consumer businesses. It was important for us to
understand how data is used and analyzed in these
environments. Most of the innovation that has taken place
recently in business intelligence happened in the retail
market. The “consumerization of IT” is a significant trend
and I think that CIOs and IT organizations that ignore it
simply have their heads in the sand.

The Takeaway
Comprehensive knowledge capture and transfer, as well as sensitivity in dealing with employees of the acquired organization,
are crucial to the success of a merger.
The retail and consumer business industry has been an early adopter of business intelligence. To a CIO looking to invest in this area,
the consumer goods industry offers interesting cues into how data can be analyzed and leveraged for effective decision making.
