What needs to happen next? Where is the next biggest
breakthrough, technological or otherwise, likely to
take place – or where does it need to take place?
RANADIVÉ: It is really moving companies from being
transactional to being event-driven. It’s that simple.
DAVENPORT: I think there are plenty of opportunities in
the space we were talking about earlier in terms of supporting decisions. If you think about it, we don’t have accountability for decisions. Who made that decision? What were
the assumptions behind it? What was the rationale for
making that decision? We have some tools certainly for
leading people along through highly structured decision and
processes, the event-driven ones that Vivek mentioned
earlier. But for the ones that are a little bit more unstructured, more relying on knowledge workers, we don’t have
good technology. I am really looking for technology that
will bring a bit more structure to decisions and a bit more
information and analysis.
But even for those human-oriented decisions where the
human makes a final call, how can we use technology to
augment it? TIBCO Spotfire has some tools for guided
analytics and I think that is one example of how to move
things along in that respect. I think we will have analytical
applications that are just as easy to use as the apps on your
iPhone, iPad or Android device, that will lead you through
a small but significant decision and give you the structure,
the data and the analysis you need to do much better than
we are doing now.

Tom, I have a question for you. You are the guru of
analytics. When are people going to start understanding that
business intelligence in many ways is an oxymoron? It is a
reporting system and you are looking at data after the fact.
Where are some of the 21st century concepts that we talked
about? What’s it going to take for people to start understanding that? Is it going to be just a new generation of
people that we have to wait for?
DAVENPORT: This has been a good day for me, so I’ll
answer on an optimistic note. I was very impressed by
some of the things that P&G people were doing, moving
beyond just the things they have done for years with
reporting on Nielsen data, etc., and now trying to get much
more forward-looking, predictive and statistical with a lot
of their analyses and more guided and automated in a lot of
cases. Then this morning I was writing a forward for a book
on web analytics by Brent Dykes, a guy at Adobe. He was
talking about the need for web analytics to move beyond
the reporting phase. He actually calls it “moving from
set-up land to action land.” All the reporting stuff is just
set-up and the real value, the real business value comes
from analytics. I’m feeling a little better, but it’s taking a
lot longer than I thought to get the world to move in that
direction.
RANADIVÉ: The way we describe it is exactly the way
Tom described it – going from being reactive to being
predictive.

RANADIVÉ: Indeed, the future IT department I see is not
that there will be no IT department; I think it will look
more like an iPhone apps store. People will be able to
create their own little applets for solving the problems of
the day or of the week. I think there is going to be much
more of the self-service aspect. The IT department will be
maintaining the apps store.
