CIO Straight Talk - Issue 2 - 34

I felt that neither the industry I was in at the time, nor the role
I was playing enabled me to feel that I was helping to make a
difference, to improve the outcomes of people’s lives. So I decided
to mix IT with healthcare.

Solving Business Problems
In my former roles as CIO for three of J&J’s operating
companies, I realized that the job of IT is to solve
problems, even the ones our business partners think are
impossible to solve. If the data exists, or can be generated,
no matter if the business says something is impossible,
there’s a way for you to use the information to solve the
issues at hand.
I remember with one of the companies I worked for, it was
hard to figure out our company gross profit in a timely
manner. It was not until around March of each year that
we found out the gross profit for the prior year. When I
inquired why we could not get the answer earlier – and get
it at the region, territory or customer level on a real-time
basis – the head of sales operations told me, “We’ve never
been able to find a way to do it.”
I believe it is a very common problem in many companies.
There are tons and tons of data, but there is no information. Even though you may be in the middle of the ocean
and may be very thirsty, you will never have any water to
drink if you do not have a bottle of fresh drinking water.
That is one value that IT offers. It can help extract and
deliver information and capabilities from the ocean of
data that the companies are drowning in. Otherwise, it is
like driving with a big piece of cardboard over the windshield. You cannot see where you are going and you do
not know what decisions you have to make ahead to
ensure you successfully get to your destination.

I have learned from that moment that the way the IT
function drives value is to listen to what the business
problems are and not necessarily take orders from our
business partners. Listen to the issues, understand the
challenges and collaborate with them to determine what
the solution should be.
I found out that the key to solving the problem of delayed
reporting of gross profit in my former company was
continuous collaboration across the business. People in
different regions worldwide did not want to share data
about their sales, standard costs, etc; it was a cultural
issue. The way we broke through was to have a can-do
attitude, rally everybody around what we had in common
(as opposed to what made our regions different) and be
persistent and passionate about driving towards a solution
that would optimize the enterprise (whole) and not focus
only on optimizing the regions (parts).

The Five “Information Rights”
I took what I learned in this and similar situations about
the power of information and the value of IT when I
moved to Hospira, the world’s leading provider of injectable drugs and infusion technologies, with approximately
14,000 employees and $3.9 billion in 2010 sales.
At Hospira, we drive what we call the five drug rights: The
right drug, for the right patient, at the right time, with the
right dose, via the right medium. Similarly, I have established the five information rights at Hospira: The right
